6 FYIs About the Disney Cultural Exchange Program

In light of the fact that I’m leaving for the US in 7 (!!) days, I thought I’d motivate myself to be a more consistent blogger by doing a blog post every day for the next week, leading up to my departure. Today I thought I’d give a quick run down on the Disney Cultural Exchange in Orlando, FL for anyone who thinks it might be something they’d like to do, or even if you just want to know more about it. 1. Live in New Zealand or Australia:Unfortunately the Cultural Exchange Program is only open to people who live in NZ or Aus. HOWEVER, there are also programs under different titles and with slightly different setups for people from other countries outside of NZ and Aus, as well as probably most famous program, the Disney College Program for domestic students. 2. Be a tertiary student:Another requirement for the program is that you have to currently be studying at a tertiary provider (for example; university, polytech or TAFEs). You must have completed at least one …

Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year!

The countdown to Disney World is on! Today marks 11 days until I’m leaving home again on another adventure and it still doesn’t quite feel real. Happy New Year and a belated Merry Christmas everyone! I hope everyone’s festive season has been fab. Mine was super relaxing with a unconventional Christmas Eve dinner with close family. 2016 didn’t quite start the way I’d imagined.  I had a fab night in town celebrating New Year’s Eve with my friends, but had been hoping for a day at the beach soaking up the sun the following day. Sadly it wasn’t to be, with everything but lovely weather greeting us on the 1st. Luckily I got a peek of sunshine yesterday before I went back to work, where my family and I took a day trip to Muriwai Beach in the far west of Auckland. Despite the fact that I’m leaving in 11 days it still didn’t start to feel real until the other day when registration opened for housing. I currently have four potential roommates (three of …

Currently: December 2015

This month marked the end of an era for me– graduating university and finishing my schooling (for now). Bachelor of Communication Studies majoring in journalism. Holla! Walking down the main street in Auckland with all my fellow classmates, and then seeing everyone graduate was such an awesome experience and one that I’ll never forget! A bit weird being surrounded by people taking photos of you while you walk down the street though, I have to admit. In other news I’ve been working at Lush a lot, being super busy with the Christmas rush and saving as much as I can for the USA (21 days until I leave NZ, it hasn’t quite sunk in yet). I had a super relaxing Christmas with good food, drink and tunes with some of my close family which was really lovely. I’ve been quite slack lately with my blogging and haven’t really done any blogworthy things if I’m honest, but rest assured you’ll be bombarded with lots of blogs posts (and hopefully vlogs) very very soon. Meanwhile, here’s a …

Food Photo Friday #28: Lunch @ Meadow

Food: Grilled chicken salad/ Consumed at: Meadow, Meadowbank, Auckland/ Date: November 2015 A couple of weeks ago Georgie came up to Auckland for the day to have her visa interview for our trip to the USA but obviously, we also needed to eat. For this lunch date we opted for Meadow, a much-raved about restaurant in the Auckland suburb of Meadowbank, that I hadn’t yet had a chance to visit. The place is quite small and cosy, there’s an indoor area that’s inviting and a little moody, with a seated area by the bar. We decided to sit outside under the glass covered patio area. Because the patio was surrounded by glass there was plenty of light streaming in and the fence surrounding the property shielded it from the sounds of the busy road close-by. As tempting as the cocktails sounded, we all opted for smoothies and juices instead, I went for the Green Genes juices which was a blend of kale, celery, apple, parsley and lemon. For lunch I had the Smoked Chicken Salad …

Quake City: A Weekend in Christchurch

So I have a confession to make: Until last week I had never, in 20 years (i.e. my whole life) been to the South Island of New Zealand. Apart from just seven months away last year, I’ve lived in NZ my whole life but had never made it further than Wellington, our capital city at the bottom of the North Island. Finally last week I made it down to the South Island for Georgie‘s 21st birthday celebration. In September 2010 a 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook the region of Canterbury leaving buildings unstable and people shaken. This was followed by countless aftershocks including a devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake the following year in February that caused unimaginable damage, killing 185 people– the second largest natural disaster the nation has seen. Visiting almost 5 years later and never having seen what the city of Christchurch had been like pre-quake was still an incredibly heartbreaking experience. I can still clearly remember sitting in front of the TV screen watching the news the day of the February earthquake, so to …

Recipe: Raw vegan chocolate and peanut butter slice

The other day one of the lovely women I work with made the most delicious batch of raw vegan chocolate peanut butter slice and I knew I had to give them a go! After a quick Google search I found this recipe from Megan at Detoxinista! I haven’t done a recipe blog post in a very very long time, so I thought I’d document how my first attempt went and share the recipe for anyone who wants to give them a go (they really are delicious!) I doubled Megan’s recipe because I had a bigger baking dish. Ingredients:    Chocolate crust 3/4 cup almond meal 2 Tablespoons of cocoa powder 2 Tablespoons of pure maple syrup 1 Tablespoon of melted coconut oil Pinch of salt   Peanut butter filling 1/2 creamy natural peanut butter (try not to accidentally buy crunchy PB like me!) 3 Tablespoons of pure maple syrup 1 Tablespoon of melted coconut oil Pinch of salt   Chocolate topping 1/4 cup cocoa 1/4 melted coconut oil 3 Tablespoons of pure maple syrup   …

Food Photo Friday #27: Lunch @ Charlie & George

Food: Poached Chicken Salad & Green Goddess smoothie/ Consumed at: Charlie & George, Stonefields, Auckland/ Date: October 2015 Before going to Charlie & George I didn’t even know the little complex where it’s housed even existed, but I’m so glad I do now! Moana and I found it by doing a bit of Googling after one of our weekly walks. We were trying to find a new place to eat and thought Charlie & George looked like a good place to check out. Driving by to find a park, I already loved the look of the place. The setup is quite industrial and modern-looking with plenty of light streaming through, thanks to the glass walls. There are tables and high top benches inside to eat on, or benches and tables outside in the sun. We chose to sit outside at one of the little tables and we ordered smoothies to start. I ordered the Green Goddess smoothie which is a beautiful blend of spinach, mint and kiwi fruit with apple juice, banana, honey and spirulina. For lunch …

Currently: November 2015

I have now officially finished university forever (or for now anyway) and I’m pretty lost about what to do with myself actually. It’s pretty strange realising that I have officially finished my institutional education and am free to do whatever I like, whenever I like! With all these changes I thought it was a good time to do this month’s ‘Currently’. This also means my blog posts will start getting more frequent again with the lead up to my next adventure in the USA! CURRENTLY: Reading: Cannot wait to start some good summer reads! I have a list on Goodreads that I can’t wait to crack into! Summer reading on the beach? Sounds perfect. Watching: As well as having some of my favourite shows back (HTGAWM is so hella good right now!) I’ve also started Chicago Fire which I’m enjoying a lot. Hello Taylor Kinney. Listening to: Still loving the Rudimental album and as much as I hate to admit it I’m loving all of JB‘s new songs. Also “Hello“! Dreaming of: Disney World! It is coming up so quickly! Planning: My …

Currently: October

Yes, I’ve skipped a month, but with a crazy-load of uni work, can you blame me? Just three more weeks until I am done, done, done with university… forever (or until I decide to study more). Anyhoo, here’s what I’ve been up to so far during the month of October. CURRENTLY: Reading: Lots and lots of lifestyle articles online, sometimes uni is fun. Watching: Everything is back! TVD, The Flash, Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, OUAT, HTGAWM and most likely missed a few in my excitement.  Listening to: I’m digging the new Rudimental album so much. “Rumour Mill” and “Treading Water” have to be a couple of my absolute faves though. TUNES. Dreaming of: THREE WEEKS UNTIL SUMMER HOLIDAYS! Planning: My trip to Walt Disney World and generally just sorting my post-uni life out. Making: Flight plans, visa plans, hotel plans and new Disney friends. Enjoying:  The last few weeks of uni with my friends, even if the workload is horrible.  Eating:  At this very moment I’m chomping down on some Watermelon Sour Patch Kids. Excited for: I know this is probably getting old, …

Food Photo Friday #26: B.L.A.T

Food: B.L.A.T/ Consumed at: Sweet Savoury, Freeman’s Bay, Auckland/ Date: August 2015 My friend from the UK came over for a couple of weeks which was the best thing ever. She also found it super weird that we eat so many things with avocado here in New Zealand. After seven long months without seeing her it was unbelievably exciting to have one of my former flatmates over in New Zealand for the first time ever! While she was over she had a lot of burgers, but this time around we went for something a bit different. When I was over in the UK all my flatmates though me and my other Kiwi flatmate were so weird because we ate avocados almost on a daily basis, so when my friend came over and saw us eating avocados again she was very amused. Sweet Savoury in Auckland’s Freeman’s Bay is literally a couple of week’s old and so we thought we’d check out their lunch menu. I went for the B.L.A.T aka bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato …
