Food Photo Friday #33: Dinner @ Jack Tar, Auckland

Food: Red Shed Sliders, Greens & a Cocktail/ Consumed at: Jack Tar, Wynyard Quarter, Auckland/ Date: December 2016 Jack Tar is one of those places I go back to time and time again. Many times to celebrate the end of a uni year or semester, sometimes for a farewell, but this time was to celebrate the end of the working year! I’m one of those people who doesn’t like to go for the same-old same-old, so if I’m heading back to a place where I’ve eaten before, I usually like to try something different to what I ate previous times. This day was no different. I wasn’t feeling too hungry, so opted for the Red Shed Sliders. There are three different sliders and you can choose to have three of the same, or one of each. I went for one of each, obviously. Each of them were delicious, and it is actually really hard for me to pick a favourite. The three options were, “beef ‘n’ cheese; pulled pork Memphis style, or beer battered fresh …

Food Photo Friday #32: Lunch @ Hello Friends + Allies

Food: Deconstructed cured salmon salad/ Consumed at: Hello Friends + Allies, Auckland/ Date: August 2016 The day ended with some of the most exciting news I’ve received in a while, but naturally it all started with a little bite to eat in the loveliest of places. I am that person who scrolls through Instagram looking at all the pretty and delicious looking food people have been eating and scouting out a new cafe spot to check out. Sure, I have my favourites, but I love variety and love trying new things, especially when it comes to food. This time round it was off down the road to Epsom to a gorgeous cafe called Hello Friends + Allies. I’d driven past a couple of times and had always loved the look of it from the outside and inside was even better! I’m a bit obsessed with plants and botany hanging from the ceilings and sitting on shelves in cafes. It gives it a feeling of being alive and almost ethereal, which I love. I got there just …

Food Photo Friday #31: Lunch @ The Workshop

Food: Pumpkin and chorizo tart & chocolate cake/ Consumed at: The Workshop, Silverdale, Auckland/ Date: July 2016 This cute little place is a new one that opened at the beginning of the year in the industrial area of Silverdale. You’d never know it was there if you weren’t in-the-know. Apologies in advance for the snapchat quality photos, I was feeling self-conscious taking photos of my food with my front-facing camera.  Newly back at my old job in Silverdale I was happy to hear that a new cafe had opened up just around the corner from where I work. My work is in a bit of an awkward place if you don’t have a car, so The Workshop opening just up the road was the best news. It’s located in old shipping containers and doesn’t look like much from the outside. But inside it has a very “workshop” feel to it with cool decor and lots of light streaming in from all corners of the cafe. You could tell how popular the place is because by the …

Food Photo Friday #30: Dinner @ Al’s Deli

Food: Al Burger & poutine/ Consumed at: Al’s Deli, Kingsland, Auckland/ Date: July 2016 What do you do after a workout? Eat all the calories back again! After a rough start to the day, I got myself sorted by working out with my friends, followed by a good feed at Al’s Deli in Kingsland and a few hours of Pokemon hunting to round up the night. I hadn’t realised that Al had opened at Kingsland as well, but I’d been to the Queen Street deli quite a few times and obviously loved it. Something that I was very keen to have was the poutine. I had been quite disappointed that the Canadian Pavilion in Epcot at Walt Disney World did not serve poutine and had been craving it everyday since. Poutine, for anyone who’s never tried it, originates from the province of Quebec in Canada and is made up of French fries drizzles in gravy and sprinkled with cheese curds, such a winning combo. So in addition to a small (but generous, in my opinion) …

Food Photo Friday #29: Lunch @ Bubba Gump

Food: Shrimper’s Heaven/ Consumed at: Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, Santa Monica, CA/ Date: January, 2016 A trip down to the seaside at Santa Monica wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Bubba Gump’s, which is perched up on the pier with a great view of the sea (and the hot lifeguards in training). Because of the time of year, Santa Monica was pretty chilly, so Loren and I decided to head inside for some much needed warmth and food at Bubba Gump. Loren had visited a Bubba Gump before during a previous trip to the States, but this was my first visit to the Forrest Gump themed restaurant. Everything was themed to perfection, and we even got given a quick Forrest Gump quiz by our waiter, who was one of the loveliest waiters I ever had during my time in the States. For lunch I chose the Shrimper’s Heaven, which was comprised of “hand breaded coconut shrimp, grilled shrimp, crisp golden shrimp and tempura shrimp with fries. And of course great homemade dippin’ sauces like tangy asian, …

Food Photo Friday #28: Lunch @ Meadow

Food: Grilled chicken salad/ Consumed at: Meadow, Meadowbank, Auckland/ Date: November 2015 A couple of weeks ago Georgie came up to Auckland for the day to have her visa interview for our trip to the USA but obviously, we also needed to eat. For this lunch date we opted for Meadow, a much-raved about restaurant in the Auckland suburb of Meadowbank, that I hadn’t yet had a chance to visit. The place is quite small and cosy, there’s an indoor area that’s inviting and a little moody, with a seated area by the bar. We decided to sit outside under the glass covered patio area. Because the patio was surrounded by glass there was plenty of light streaming in and the fence surrounding the property shielded it from the sounds of the busy road close-by. As tempting as the cocktails sounded, we all opted for smoothies and juices instead, I went for the Green Genes juices which was a blend of kale, celery, apple, parsley and lemon. For lunch I had the Smoked Chicken Salad …

Food Photo Friday #26: B.L.A.T

Food: B.L.A.T/ Consumed at: Sweet Savoury, Freeman’s Bay, Auckland/ Date: August 2015 My friend from the UK came over for a couple of weeks which was the best thing ever. She also found it super weird that we eat so many things with avocado here in New Zealand. After seven long months without seeing her it was unbelievably exciting to have one of my former flatmates over in New Zealand for the first time ever! While she was over she had a lot of burgers, but this time around we went for something a bit different. When I was over in the UK all my flatmates though me and my other Kiwi flatmate were so weird because we ate avocados almost on a daily basis, so when my friend came over and saw us eating avocados again she was very amused. Sweet Savoury in Auckland’s Freeman’s Bay is literally a couple of week’s old and so we thought we’d check out their lunch menu. I went for the B.L.A.T aka bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato …

Food Photo Friday #25: Lunch @ Frolic

Food: Warm chicken salad/ Consumed at: Frolic, Royal Oak, Auckland/ Date: September 2015 It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve done a Food Photo Friday for a variety of reasons, but now I’m back to it with this week’s edition, #25! I was procrastinating from study, as you do, and decided I’d go to a cafe in Royal Oak called Frolic which I’ve driven past a lot and always wanted to try. I also know a few people who work there, one of whom I don’t see very often, so it was lovely to see them again! I went for the delicious sounding warm chicken salad from their 2015 Winter menu, which was a bowl filled with yum: “cajun chicken cooked in garlic butter served with gourmet potatoes, roast veges, cos lettuce and sweet chilli sauce.” It was also a very decent size, so much so, I almost couldn’t finish it all! That was all washed down with a caramel latte– standard. I would definitely recommend this salad if you’re a fan of a good …

Food Photo Friday #24: Dinner @ Chow, Wellington

Food: Beef Pho /Consumed at: Chow, Wellington CBD/ Date: June 2015 Chow is a cool Asian-fusion place in Wellington CBD that Georgie and I went to for dinner while I was down in Wellington a couple of months ago to visit. Georgie had been here for a work-do a little while back, so recommended we go there for dinner. When we got there it was so packed that we had to line up to reserve a table (a good indication it’s a good place to eat). The next available table wasn’t going to be free for at least 45 minutes, so after putting our names down, we went to find a cafe to grab a coffee inside while we waited, away from the freezing cold outside. About half an hour later we got a call saying there was a table available so we headed back, got seated and ordered. I went for the Vietnamese Beef Pho (no surprises there), Georgie went for the Jungle Curry and we shared a plate of Beggars Purses which were filled …

Food Photo Friday #23: Lunch @ The White Rabbit

Food: Roasted chicken + smoothie/ Consumed at: The White Rabbit, Auckland CBD/ Date: August 2015 I was super excited to head down to The White Rabbit for lunch with my lovely friends this week! It was the best way to get a bit of a breather from a long day at uni. First off, let me start with the decor. I absolutely adored it. Everything is so light and spacious and it is everything I want my first house to look like. The girls and I even commented on the music– so good. First I ordered a green smoothie which consisted of spinach, spirulina, apple and pineapple if I remember correctly, which was absolutely delish and I finished mine well before the others had gotten through half of their’s! Then came lunch which was an absolute dream: half a roasted chicken on split grain and mushrooms with wilted spinach and a perfect jus to go with it all. It was also a huge serving so I had to pretty much wobble back up to uni …
