Food Photo Friday #36: Lunch @ Birdie’s

Food: Szechuan Roast Duck, Roast Pumpkin Birdie Bowl, Cocktail on Tap/ Consumed at: Birdie’s All Day Bar + Deli/ Date: April 2018. I live just a couple of minutes away from Sylvia Park, but despite this, I still haven’t had a chance to check out all the new eateries that opened at The Grove at the end of last year. Last Saturday, bored and hungry (plus a little hungover) I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to head to one of the eateries I hadn’t yet been to yet, Birdie’s, to see how it was. I hadn’t yet talked to anyone who had been there and saw pretty mixed reviews online, but after a look at the menu there sounded like quite a handful of tasty dishes, so I was keen to give it a try. We headed in for a late lunch (around 3pm) so the place was pretty quiet. I really liked the decor – we sat opposite a wall with wooden frames framing bunches of dried leaves, herbs and flowers and …

Currently: March 2018

Oh, hello there. Long time no see. I’ve stumbled my way back to the blog for a couple of reasons; 1) one of my workmates said I should start a food blog (little does she know I have a blog already, I’m just terrible at updating it and 2) I do miss it, quite a lot! I can’t say my life has changed very drastically at all. I’m at the same job, same house… It was my birthday a couple of weeks ago (23 years-old holla), did go to New York for a few days in August last year and on an amazing one-month trip to Hong Kong and Vietnam though over the Christmas break, so I’ll be doing a bit of catch up and talking about that in the coming weeks. In the meantime, here’s what I’ve been loving during the month of March. CURRENTLY Reading: I really haven’t been doing much reading at the moment. Bar, proofreading and subbing my magazine. I would really love some book recommendations though! Watching: Not a lot. The billions …

Food Photo Friday #35: Dinner @ Happy Boy

Food: Pork burger, KFC and Peach Iced Tea Slushie/ Consumed at: Happy Boy, Royal Oak, Auckland/ Date: 22.07.2017 Royal Oak was the busiest I’ve ever seen it on a Saturday when I stopped into the brand new Happy Boy last Saturday. It’s difficult to miss with its neon lights pulsing from within. Walking inside is like being transported straight into a video game, it’s uber cool. The place was buzzing, there was a massive line of people waiting for tables which almost put us off, but after being told it would only be a half hour wait (which turned out only being about 20 minutes,) we were happy to wait around and soak up the atmosphere. We got there just after 6.30pm and the place was filled with young families digging into delicious burgers and sides. When we left, close to around 8pm the crowds had died down and there was no wait. So if you want to be seated quickly, best to go a bit later. I’d already decided what I wanted before heading …

Food Photo Friday #34: Lunch @ Gerome

Food: (featured above) Roasted cauliflower and oysters/ Consumed at: Gerome, Parnell, Auckland / Date: May 2017. There are definitely a lot of perks to my job, and one of them is going to media and PR events where many times you’re treated to a delicious meal while you learn about the latest beauty products, important news, or new innovations. This time in particular we had a PR event at the newly opened Gerome in Parnell, housed in the same building that the famous Iguacu used to be. I was instantly impressed by the classiness of the place. Plush seats downstairs and a nice and open, loft-like space upstairs. We were treated to a delicious cocktail on arrival, from memory mine was a bright turquoise margarita that had caught my eye as soon as I’d seen it. Next came the presentation (which was really interesting by the way, it was about gems and I definitely walked away with a whole lot of newfound knowledge – and a very full tummy,) which took place while we ate. And …

Food Photo Friday #33: Dinner @ Jack Tar, Auckland

Food: Red Shed Sliders, Greens & a Cocktail/ Consumed at:Jack Tar, Wynyard Quarter, Auckland/ Date: December 2016 Jack Tar is one of those places I go back to time and time again. Many times to celebrate the end of a uni year or semester, sometimes for a farewell, but this time was to celebrate the end of the working year! I’m one of those people who doesn’t like to go for the same-old same-old, so if I’m heading back to a place where I’ve eaten before, I usually like to try something different to what I ate previous times. This day was no different. I wasn’t feeling too hungry, so opted for the Red Shed Sliders. There are three different sliders and you can choose to have three of the same, or one of each. I went for one of each, obviously. Each of them were delicious, and it is actually really hard for me to pick a favourite. The three options were, “beef ‘n’ cheese; pulled pork Memphis style, or beer battered fresh fish” …

Food Photo Friday #32: Lunch @ Hello Friends + Allies

Food: Deconstructed cured salmon salad/ Consumed at: Hello Friends + Allies, Auckland/ Date: August 2016 The day ended with some of the most exciting news I’ve received in a while, but naturally it all started with a little bite to eat in the loveliest of places. I am that person who scrolls through Instagram looking at all the pretty and delicious looking food people have been eating and scouting out a new cafe spot to check out. Sure, I have my favourites, but I love variety and love trying new things, especially when it comes to food. This time round it was off down the road to Epsom to a gorgeous cafe called Hello Friends + Allies. I’d driven past a couple of times and had always loved the look of it from the outside and inside was even better! I’m a bit obsessed with plants and botany hanging from the ceilings and sitting on shelves in cafes. It gives it a feeling of being alive and almost ethereal, which I love. I got there just …

Food Photo Friday #31: Lunch @ The Workshop

Food: Pumpkin and chorizo tart & chocolate cake/ Consumed at: The Workshop, Silverdale, Auckland/ Date: July 2016 This cute little place is a new one that opened at the beginning of the year in the industrial area of Silverdale. You’d never know it was there if you weren’t in-the-know. Apologies in advance for the snapchat quality photos, I was feeling self-conscious taking photos of my food with my front-facing camera.  Newly back at my old job in Silverdale I was happy to hear that a new cafe had opened up just around the corner from where I work. My work is in a bit of an awkward place if you don’t have a car, so The Workshop opening just up the road was the best news. It’s located in old shipping containers and doesn’t look like much from the outside. But inside it has a very “workshop” feel to it with cool decor and lots of light streaming in from all corners of the cafe. You could tell how popular the place is because by the …

Food Photo Friday #30: Dinner @ Al’s Deli

Food: Al Burger & poutine/ Consumed at: Al’s Deli, Kingsland, Auckland/ Date: July 2016 What do you do after a workout? Eat all the calories back again! After a rough start to the day, I got myself sorted by working out with my friends, followed by a good feed at Al’s Deli in Kingsland and a few hours of Pokemon hunting to round up the night. I hadn’t realised that Al had opened at Kingsland as well, but I’d been to the Queen Street deli quite a few times and obviously loved it. Something that I was very keen to have was the poutine. I had been quite disappointed that the Canadian Pavilion in Epcot at Walt Disney World did not serve poutine and had been craving it everyday since. Poutine, for anyone who’s never tried it, originates from the province of Quebec in Canada and is made up of French fries drizzles in gravy and sprinkled with cheese curds, such a winning combo. So in addition to a small (but generous, in my opinion) …

Food Photo Friday #29: Lunch @ Bubba Gump

Food: Shrimper’s Heaven/ Consumed at: Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, Santa Monica, CA/ Date: January, 2016 A trip down to the seaside at Santa Monica wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Bubba Gump’s, which is perched up on the pier with a great view of the sea (and the hot lifeguards in training). Because of the time of year, Santa Monica was pretty chilly, so Loren and I decided to head inside for some much needed warmth and food at Bubba Gump. Loren had visited a Bubba Gump before during a previous trip to the States, but this was my first visit to the Forrest Gump themed restaurant. Everything was themed to perfection, and we even got given a quick Forrest Gump quiz by our waiter, who was one of the loveliest waiters I ever had during my time in the States. For lunch I chose the Shrimper’s Heaven, which was comprised of “hand breaded coconut shrimp, grilled shrimp, crisp golden shrimp and tempura shrimp with fries. And of course great homemade dippin’ sauces like tangy asian, …

Food Photo Friday #28: Lunch @ Meadow

Food: Grilled chicken salad/ Consumed at: Meadow, Meadowbank, Auckland/ Date: November 2015 A couple of weeks ago Georgie came up to Auckland for the day to have her visa interview for our trip to the USA but obviously, we also needed to eat. For this lunch date we opted for Meadow, a much-raved about restaurant in the Auckland suburb of Meadowbank, that I hadn’t yet had a chance to visit. The place is quite small and cosy, there’s an indoor area that’s inviting and a little moody, with a seated area by the bar. We decided to sit outside under the glass covered patio area. Because the patio was surrounded by glass there was plenty of light streaming in and the fence surrounding the property shielded it from the sounds of the busy road close-by. As tempting as the cocktails sounded, we all opted for smoothies and juices instead, I went for the Green Genes juices which was a blend of kale, celery, apple, parsley and lemon. For lunch I had the Smoked Chicken Salad …
